Someone close to you celebrating a birthday during COVID19? All is not lost! This is an opportunity to plan a truly unique, once-in-a-lifetime birthday celebration for your partner, friends, or family.
Where there’s a lack of restaurants, there’s an opportunity to get inventive and bring the restaurant home. Where there’s a lack of pubs, you can find creative new ways to get silly with alcohol. Here are 4 of our best ideas for celebrating a birthday during COVID19 lockdown and restrictions period.
1. Decorate the house
If you’re living with the birthday boy or girl, surprise them with a fully decked out and decorated house on the morning of their birthday. This means you might have to do some sneaking around at night, but the payoff will be worth it when they wake up and see your awesome creations. Hang up streamers, put up a big birthday sign, get balloons, set up candy bowls and party food, go all out! You can even pick a theme like ‘island holiday’ (a good choice if your birthday holiday has been cancelled) and decorate your home with coconuts, palm leaves, and a mini tiki bar.
2. At-home high tea
Maybe you can’t have a fancy tea party, but you can bring the high tea to your home. Our best tip here is to go for an all-out interactive high tea experience at home, complete with the scones, jams, little sandwiches, and selection of teas. Dress up a table with candlesticks and fresh flowers, and put on some background music to make it feel like you’re dining in an opulent restaurant.
If you’re not quite the scone and sandwich making type, order in high tea catering or hire a private chef to serve you and the birthday boy or girl. If you feel up to the task, you can find a high tea guide here with sandwich & scone recipes and ideas, and information on high tea etiquette. The great part about having an at-home high tea? You can leave the etiquette if you want to.
3. Video call drinking games
If your friend had planned a boozy pub crawl or big bash for their birthday, you can make up for your losses with drinking games. Whether in person or by video call, drinking games are silly and always guarantee laughter. Get your friends together on Facetime, Zoom, or Houseparty, prepare your drinks for the evening, and play away. Sure, you can’t do beer pong via video conferencing, but there are so many other fun drinking games you can play. Here are some ideas to get you started.
4. Virtual or DIY wine & cheese tasting
Wine and cheese are the perfect pair for birthday gifts and celebrations. Whether it’s your mother, sister, best friend, or partner, you can guarantee a good time when wine and cheese are involved. While you may not be able to travel around and visit wineries during the lockdown period, you can make your own winery experience at home. There are two ways to do it: Make your own tasting or go virtual.
Making your own tasting is the funnest option: head to your local bottle shop and choose a selection of wines you think the birthday boy or girl will love. Do the same with cheeses (and maybe sneak in a couple of your favourites, too). The other option is to do a virtual tasting with a cheese or wine producer. Many producers are doing online tastings during COVID19. You can pick up samples locally or have them posted to you, then go through the tasting video with your birthday friend. It’s just like being in the Hunter Valley, only you don’t have to drive home afterwards.
