OK, hear us out here… how about celebrating April Fool’s Day with a cheeky lunch or dinner full of fake foods that’ll boggle your friends and family’s minds?! This should be one of the funnest days of the year, full of laughter, pranks, and illusions, but we don’t think it’s celebrated anywhere near as much as it should be. So we’ve thought up some fun ways you can trick your friends and family and have them question their sanity – while enjoying a delicious feast at the same time!
All of these foods can be recreated by our private chefs, so don’t worry about the execution… we’ll take care of the ‘how’. You just think of how fun it’ll be to see the confused, shocked looks on your friends’ faces!
Apricot fried eggs
Start April Fool’s Day off with a bang with this sneaky breakfast take on fried eggs. Use a slice of sweet cake for the ‘bread’, top it with a generous dollop of vanilla yoghurt or cream cheese, and finish it off with an apricot half for the yolk. Deliciously tricky!
Jelly berry sodas
Perhaps you want to serve these as an aperitif before the meal… invite your guests to take a sip of these inviting sodas, only to realise that they’re made from jelly and can’t be sucked through a straw! Kids will keep trying to suck them through, making for plenty of hilarity…
Imagine calling in your kids to have a bite of these delicious cupcakes, only to realise they’re made from meatloaf and mashed potato! These are super easy to make, or we can organise them for you. Just prepare your meatloaf as you normally would, then top with a swirl of mashed potatoes and a sprinkle of whatever garnish you fancy.
Cheesy pizza cake
Dessert first will surprise the kids, but imagine their surprise when they bite into this cheesy pizza cake! The cake is made with a savoury bread dough and filled with pizza sauce and pepperoni slices. For the icing, drizzle a generous amount of mozzarella cheese and voila! Taste bud confusion all around. Find the recipe for this cake here.
Apple hot chips
This is a fairly easy recipe to pull off. Just slice some apples (a crinkle cut slicer works best), sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, and cook until tender. Serve with a side of strawberry jam ‘tomato sauce’ and you’ve got yourself one deliciously disguised snack!
Mashed potato sundaes
And for dessert… mashed potato and gravy! These sundaes sure look exciting, but they’re far from the expectation of ice cream and caramel sauce. This easy April Fool’s dish is made from mashed potato (try to keep them a little chunky) drizzled with gravy and topped with a roasted cherry tomato. The trick really comes to life by using sundae cups.
Meatloaf and mash dessert

So first we had meatloaf hiding as a cupcake, and this time it’s dessert disguised as meatloaf! This dessert uses chocolate rice crackles as the meatloaf, made with Rice Bubbles or a similar cereal. The mashed potato is made from a mashed cheesecake and topped with caramel sauce. The veggies? Orange Starburst sliced into quarters, and a few green m&ms should suffice!
